Well, I'm back online - sort of!
We ended up, after a short discussion, deciding it was best to go to Amarillo to check in on Jesse's dad's condition and his step-mother's well being.
Camilo's son ended up going home the day after his appendectomy and we remained in touch with that family by phone. Obviously an appendectomy incision is painful and he is recovering at home.
JoAnn & Jesse's brother, Frank's, wife ended up NOT having "back" surgery (as she had previously discussed with me) but some hand surgery (scratching my head???). I'm thinking maybe it was a procedure on the nerves, etc. to see if they could fix the pain/numbness in her arms and hands - rather than do spine surgery at this point. Not a lot of details. Like I said, Frank isn't a reliable source of information and JoAnn WAS supposed to go down there to help Sharon after surgery - but Frank never came to pick her up, nor did he call. We learned, AFTER we went to Amarillo, that her hands and not her spine had been the surgical procedure. Since the surgery ended up being something totally different from what we were led to believe, I think going to Amarillo was our best decision - hands down!
Jesse's & JoAnn's dad looks thinner and thinner. I'm not sure if he knew us most of the time we visited. At one point he definitely realized JoAnn was there and the two cried together. He went in and out of knowing who Jesse was and was very confused about my and the girls' identity. He IS at home - for now. We discussed his options with my mil and she is seeking more assistance as we told her to do several months ago. I think some of the things that are falling apart around their house will be funded by a city project that helps those in need due to medical causes. Remember, she still has Daddy's sister to care for and she has beginning Alzheimer's.
We visited with his dad, step-mom, and aunt the in the late afternoon when we arrived the first day. We got to see Jesse's half-sister, Elisa, before she left town for a while.
Meanwhile, the next morning, we bought roughly $500 worth of groceries, and also things that their food stamps won't buy (like soap, napkins, detergent, etc.) and surprised my mil yesterday. She barely had storage for all we bought and we feel good that her freezer in the garage and the small refrigerator freezer are well stocked (to the gills) and there are many non-perishable items that should last several months. We were blessed by finding wonderful deals and prayed, before we shopped, that God would direct us to the right products. Buying groceries for someone else is difficult, not knowing their tastes preferences, etc. We bought large packages of hamburger meat, hotdogs, and pork chops - and some freezer bags to divide the items up into smaller portions for her size of family.
She can now use her food stamps for milk, eggs, bread, (etc.), and any other things she might not have ordinarily felt she could afford to buy. She hugged us as we carried things in and said Satan had been telling her "no one cares about her" or her situation. Proof, HE cares more for us all than we realize and sometimes the most unlikely people are the ones to bless us. Anyway, yesterday morning was spent shopping and then unloading stuff in some sort of order (so she could put it away later on) and me separating the meat into smaller packages.
Jesse's half sister, who is pregnant again, is having a horrible time. The relationship with the father appears to be over and she is due next month. She has a 15 month old son from a man who shot himself in the head in her car (in front of her) before she ever knew she was pregnant with her first child. Prayers for her would be deeply appreciated by us and my mil. She is young, but I don't think ANY age would be able to cope with the choices and consequences of what she is having to bear.
We boarded the pets (quickly) Tuesday morning after we decided to leave town. We left town a little later than we wanted to. It rained off and on all the way. Much to my dismay, I couldn't find my camera ANYWHERE and decided, in our haste, it had been left behind at the house. We bought a disposable camera to take some family pictures while we were there. Guess who found the camera as we headed home???? Yep! Me! I found it right as we were on our way home! It was in the console of the Suburban. I honestly don't remember putting it there, nor does anyone else.
Maybe tomorrow I can post the humorous ride home. The motel was great and gave us a discount due to a family medical emergency. Can't say enough good things about them! The restaurants we ate at . . . that's another story.
After our last meal, my humorous photos of the Texas and Oklahoma countryside ceased. The last meal made most of us sick and the service was rotten. We were completely shattered when Rissy discovered a fly under her chicken. When it was pointed out to the waiter his response was, "ok? . . . " We asked for the manager who said, "Yeah, we try to keep flies out of here, but every time the door opens more come in." We weren't taking issue with the flies buzzing around our table, but the fact one had been "cooked" under Rissy's chicken. They got our steak order wrong twice. We asked for medium rare and I knew, the second time, there would be trouble as it took a VERY long to get another steak out to us. Medium rare just doesn't take very long to cook!! The server felt so bad (probably brand new) and decided to avoid our table as best as he could for the remainder of our visit. Unfortunately, we had to flag down other people to get the salad he forgot to bring, the sour cream that never arrived, the refills of ice water . . . The list goes on and on. The manager didn't offer to comp Rissy's meal or our inconvenience which added insult to injury. Then on the way out, we noticed EVERY table had the rolls that were NEVER delivered to our table. We had assumed they had stopped making them. The place is called "Montana Mike's" and we ate there in Kansas after visiting Nikki in Denver several years ago. It was excellent food, excellent service, and had rolls you could beg the rest of your life for!!! It was so good and we were so excited to discover one went in about an hour from Oklahoma City. This place was clearly NOT what we had experienced in Kansas.
Besides being given a discount on our motel rooms, which were VERY nice (as was every single one of the personnel we encountered), I realized we had failed to return a huge amount of rented movies before we left town. I went in today and explained the circumstances and they cut the late fee in half and let us re-rent one movie at 1/2 price. God is so good to us! The, too, have a discount for medical emergencies!
I went to our P.O. box, which was stuffed with checks to Jesse. Praise God! With all this rain, he's way behind in mowing. You don't mow - you don't make money.
Then I went to pick up the animals at the vet. The gal at the desk (the same one who had been so nice when we took Jesse-boy in to be put to sleep and said she'd keep him by her desk in case he had more seizures) greeted me with the question, "Did Dr. Smith happen to call you this morning about Sampson?" - our dog. "Nooooooooo," I replied thinking something might have gone terribly wrong - like maybe we no longer HAD a dog . . . Well, he had developed diarrhea and Dr. Smith thinks it's most likely from a schnauzer who was boarded at the same time and barked the entire two days (and nights) Sampson was boarded. Dr. Smith felt so bad for Sampson, he sent him home with two prescriptions - free of charge! So, another blessing, although Sampson probably doesn't think so.
I've locked Stormy and Sampson in my bedroom (his bed - her litter box) and Chirper is running all over the front of the house. He was upsetting the other pets because they are older and they were in no mood (whatsoever) to be playful with Chirper. Let's just say Sampson's and Stormy's patience had worn thin! I've washed their soiled towels from the stay at the vet's place.
I have NOTHING planned for dinner, so I guess it will be baked frozen chicken breasts with something or other!
So, as I said, I'm home - sort of.
What a whirlwind trip and set of things to deal with in such a short time!
