  • The Best Laid Plans for Tuesday

We’ll see if my day turns out anything close to resembling what I’m about to say I have planned!

Going to Sam’s for water and ground beef never happened yesterday.  I decided to focus on things I could complete, so as not to have “this and that” looming in the future to be finished.   One of my worst habits is to have 92  million things going at once, with nothing completed.  So . . .

I finished the laundry except for my own sheets.  The guest room quilts and shams were done as well as mine and one last child’s load of laundry.  I even washed the dog’s bedding.  The guest room beds are remade.  I pulled out some ground beef around noon, and it thawed well enough to be browned at 5:30pm and made into vegetable beef soup.  We had some leftover whole wheat rolls from Friday’s meal, and it made a tasty dinner.

I homeschooled with the girls.  We accomplished a lot in the subjects I don’t like teaching:  Community Helpers, Health, and History.  We never got to Science.  Rissy works daily on her reading and math skills.  I feel better after covering the material we did, as we are ahead of schedule.  I hate falling behind.  We talked a lot about “stranger danger” and made up a “Safe People” list that I will keep posted on the white board for a while.  That’s how I was able to do so much laundry.  We sit at the kitchen table and the laundry area is close by.   Believe me, every time that dryer buzzed, I was on it – folding clothes, transferring things from the washer to the dryer, and starting a new load in the washer!

Chirper made it through the day without Stormy attacking him.  I thought her good behavior might be over when, in the evening as we watched TV, she was sitting on the loveseat snoozing and he climbed up on the ottoman in front of her and sniffed *her* blanket.  If a cat’s jaw can drop, hers did!!!  Then . . . he STEPPED on her blanket.  She actually tensed up and swallowed hard (more like a gulp) and eyed him like a hawk.  Jesse and I rolled with silent laughter until we had tears.  I was doing the voice-over for Stormy, whispering “her” thoughts, “Noooooo!  Not MY blanket!   That’s  miiiiiiiine.  No way!  You’re not going to lay DOWN on it, are you?  Not on MY BLANKET?????”  Chirper hopped down and there was a definitely sigh as Stormy’s body relaxed.  I think “the blanket” might have been the invisible line she’s drawn for crossing her tolerance level!!!

We locked him in the guest room, he feels very comfortable there, overnight.  I didn’t want to be awakened to cats brawling in the hallway!  I need to get him a collar with his name tag & our phone # (Sampson needs one too), and put flea/tick treatment on both cats and the dog.  Jesse bathed Sampson Sunday night.

He’ll be locked up in “his” room today when we go to Sam’s.  Rissy has a prescription we HAVE to pick up at the Wal-Mart up by Stephanie’s apartment.  There is a Sam’s next door.  I hate to drive that far, but she can’t go without her allergy medicine until Friday, which is the next time we’ll be up that way.  So, like it or not, I get to go to Sam’s today.  A mile down the road is a PetSmart, so I COULD have a tag made for Chirper & Sampson while I’m at it.

No other lofty goals.  Just the expensive trip in my gas guzzling Suburban to buy expensive groceries!  Rissy’s prescription is on Wal-Mart’s $4 list and, because of that, insurance doesn’t pay for it.

I will probably make something with ground beef for dinner again, since I’m buying that at Sam’s.  I feel brain dead when it comes to ground beef creativity!!!  I’m also going to swallow hard and look at their steaks and roasts for some options other than ground beef or chicken breasts every night!  We can afford to do that in the summer months.  Also, I bought a turkey last week, and that’s planned for sometime in the next few weeks.

I’ll share a few pictures from when Chirper woke up this morning.  I deleted a bunch, again.  He moves so quickly!  He walked out of his room.  Made himself cozy on the sofa.  I snapped his picture and he immediately was at MY end of the sofa.  I got one shot, before he was ready to jump down and explore.  Full of energy!  Youth!  I remember that – I think!

See how skinny and tiny he still is?  And, yes, that is a jump rope we use to tie his double doors together!

Cozied up on the sofa and, after the snap of the camera, he was checking me out!

And then, gone in a flash!

So am I!  Have a blessed day!

  • I did tons of laundry yesterday too! It feels good to have it all done and put away. Of course, I know you have LOTS more for your family than I do.  ~~ When I get in a recipe rut I cruise some of the recipe sites on the internet. A lot of them have ingredients I can’t get here, but sometimes I can substitute. ~~ I hope you got some more things from your list completed!

  • @DanishDoll -

It’s so funny that you should mention ingredients. I was thinking of you in the store last week and wondered what things you can’t get in Denmark that you miss. I even wondered about the variety of spices we have here, compared to there. Then those American “take for granted” staples like Jell-o and salad dressings.

  • Awww….too cute!

I meant to ask you about the bees outside. Are they actually bees or are they wasps/yellow jackets? I am categorically against destroying bees because they do so much good, but wasps and yj’s are another story. The wasps were really bad at camp this year. I know there are some homemade wasp traps you can make to lure and kill them. That might be a thought for the patio.

Have you made goulash with the ground beef? My family loves it. Cook 2 # ground beef (for us), drain the grease, then add beef broth (or bouillon), about 2 cups worth, and paprika and garlic powder. And a bit of cayenne. Then you cook that until the broth gets into the beef really well but where there’s still some “juice” as Abby calls it. We serve it over white rice. I buy my paprika & garlic at Sam’s too, as we tend to go through it pretty fast and you can’t beat their prices.

  • Are you still up for going to the park on day?? Let me know when you have the time and maybe a group of us can meet there. I will call Emily and Cherie and see if they want to go to. Your story of you making up words for the cat is really funny. I do that with our dog. Lisa~~

  • We can get most spices here, but not so cheap. In America, you can find jars of spices at the Dollar Store. Here you pay much more. We don’t have the variety here that America has in most products, and Denmark does NOT have ANY good peanut butter or grape jelly! LOL! Kraft is in Denmark, so we do have some of their products — mostly just the salad dressings. I miss American brownie mixes and cake mixes. I make everything from scratch here. After living here almost eight years, we have adjusted. We only come to the States every two years, if we can manage it, and we try to stock up on things. Airlines are making it more and more difficult to bring much back, though and are now charging extra for checked bags.
